Talking at Night by Claire Daverley Soundtrack
Have you ever fallen in love with a book so much that no matter how many times you read it, you permanently ache for the story? No? Just me? Well, in the absence of a sequel for the book and in a delirious fever dream of needing more, I decided to create my own playlist/soundtrack as a bit of an homage to one of my favourite books of all time. Also, selfishly, this will act as the perfect background music for the next time I do a re-read.
Why Talking at Night?
I won’t get into all the details of why I love this book so much here, because I’ll be writing a full review in my next blog (stay tuned). But I will say this: Talking at Night is a delicate love story. It is also a story of the crushing aftermath of grief. And it is a heartbreaking depiction of how very easy it is to silently give up on yourself.
What is a book playlist/soundtrack?
If you’re an immersive reader, you’re probably already familiar with the concept of a book playlist/soundtrack. For those who aren’t, book playlists are basically a compilation of songs that would suit the vibes of the book and/or reflect the thoughts and emotions of the characters throughout the story. Something you can listen to while you read to deepen the experience or simply add ambience. Sometimes these are compiled by the authors themselves, but more often than not, they’re made by fans (i.e. yours truly).
Soundtrack links and details
Whether you’ve already read Talking at Night, are planning to read it in the near future, or are just here for a life-changing playlist (okay, maybe not life-changing, but hopefully relaxing at the very least), I hope you enjoy it.
One last note: I’ve created the playlist to specifically correlate to each chapter in the book and have added a full breakdown below (plus a few quotes here and there). Here is the link to the playlist on my Spotify account: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3qrb3jrfvlCgjYDeppkR6w?si=ecc78b7bff224c92

“I wish I’d done everything on earth with you, she says. The street is quiet. No cars, or closing doors. Just them, and her voice, on the linen-dry wind. It’s not mine, she says. The quote. But it’s beautiful, isn’t it? He nods, but barely, because he is not used to such talk. And I feel it, Rosie says, still with that smile of hers. I was just thinking that I feel it.”
“It is all too perfect, of course. Too right, for a life of wrong.”

30. Bleeding Out – Chance Peña
“You’re indecisive, for one. You let other people choose for you, over what you want, and that’s not just sad, Rosie, it’s fucking spineless, which is the opposite of what you actually are. And you have this false perception of what’s good and, I don’t know, proper. Like it matters. You don’t live your life the way you should. You never speak out, to anyone, least of all your mother, who frankly could do with being put straight. You don’t sing, anymore. You deny yourself everything. You rob yourself, Roe. Every second of every hour, you’re forcing yourself into some kind of box, and it’s fucking painful to witness”
